What is a pension gap?

A pension gap occurs when you accrue less pension than you need to live a comfortable life after retirement. Several factors can contribute: switching employers (changing jobs can alter or temporarily reduce your pension plan), divorce (accrued pension may be divided between partners, reducing your individual amount), working abroad (employment outside the Netherlands may result in lower Dutch pension accrual, and your AOW pension will also be reduced by 2% per year that you do not work in the Netherlands), part-time work (reduced work hours lead to lower pension contributions), and a pension plan with limited accrual options (not all pension plans offer equal benefits).
